Jones Three Clear In Seeking Second Aussie Open Title In Four Years

… Sydney, Australia

Australian Matt Jones intends drawing on winning memories of four years ago in taking a three-shot lead into the final round of the Australian Open in Sydney.

Jones, 39 posted a third round 68 that included five birdies and dropped only two shots to move to 13-under par on the Australian Club course where he has been a member since aged 15.

American Cameron Tringale (69) is in second place on 10-under par and with sensational Japan amateur Takumi Kanaya (70), South African Louis Oosthuizen (70) and England’s Paul Casey (71) sharing third plae on nine-under par.

Jones, 39 captured the famed Stonehaven Cup in 2015 by denying then World No. 1 Jordan Speith the honours at the Australian Club.

Now the US-based Aussie is one round shy of joining Speith as a double Australian Open winner with the American having won the event in 2014 and returned to a third straight visit in 2016 to win.

“I’m sure I can draw on it. I haven’t won a lot of golf in my life,” he said.

“I’ve won Houston Open, won a couple of other smaller Tournaments and then the Australian Open, but it’s only four years past and I’ll draw on some of that experience tomorrow, of course.”

And aside from looking to capture a second Australian Open win there is the bonus of a tee time in next year’s 149th Open Championship at Royal St. George’s.

At this stage the three leaders, and with the exception of 2010 Open winner Oosthuizen, are not exempt into golf’s oldest major.
