Marc Leishman finds himself the lone Aussie into the last 16 of the WGC – Dell Technologies Match-Play championship in Austin, Texas.

Leishman was just among small handful in the initial 64-player field to win all three matches on the demanding Austin Country Club course laid out along the Colorado River in the Texas capital.

The Warnambool-born Leishman was never behind in handing out World No. 6 Bryson DeChambeau a 5 & 4 spanking.

Leishman won the first with a birdie, the second with a par, the third with a birdie before DeChambeau stopped the rot in winning four thanks to a birdie but it was Leishman soon planting his foot on the victory pedal winning five with a birdie to the American’s bogey and then racing to 4up with a birdie on six.

Leishman then birdied the par-5 ninth hole to head the back nine with a commanding 5up advantage.

Holes 10 and 11 were halved and while DeChambeau won 12 with a par to Leishman’s bogey, the Aussie won 13 when the American conceded the hole.

The duo were than shaking hands after each halving the 14t with par ‘4s’ for a big Leishman win.

“I got off to a really good start so that made things a little bit easier,” he said.

“To be up against a player the calibre of Bryson you need to keep the foot on the pedal, so I managed to do that in making quite a lot of birdies today.

“One of my big strengths when I do play match-play is that I seem to always put the ball in play.  My determination helps me so for the most play I do play pretty smart and keep in play.

“It’s all about knowing when to be conservative and when to be aggressive.  There is times throughout a match where you have be both and you do both things at the right time.”

Leishman will now tackle 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen in Saturday’s showdown for a place in the quarter-final’s.

Sadly, fellow Australians Jason Day and Cameron Smith lost all three of their matches.
