Garcia On Target At Nedbank To Achieve A Rare Career Achievement

Sergio Garcia is on target to accomplished for only a second time in his 34-tournament winning career and that is to win back-to-back with success in the Nedbank Challenge.

Garcia, 38 will take a two-shot lead into the last day after posting a third day 71 for a 10-under par total at Sun City in South Africa.

The Spaniard, who was a controversial Ryder Cup ‘wildcard’ pick, won in his very first event post Versailles and now looks set to win the Nedbank for a third occasion after capturing the 2001 and 2003 event when is not European Tour sanctioned.

“To win would be great,” he said.

“Winning any tournament is always amazing but winning here, a Rolex Series Event, obviously is extra special. It would be really nice and we’re going to try to do that.

“It’s going to be tough, there’s no doubt about that, but it’s great to come with some good momentum, playing nicely and in the lead. It should be a fun day.

“I think if I can manage to shoot somewhere in the 60s, maybe 70 might be enough. I’m going to see if I can shoot below 70 and see if that’s good enough.”

The only other occasion Garcia has won back to back was in late 2011 when he stormed to an 11-shot success in the Castellon Masters and then won the Andalucian Masters a week later.

And while it would be a third Nedbank Challenge success for Garcia should he win, let’s not forget he’s alson won three Valderrrama Masters in his 20-year plus career (2011, 2017 & 2018) and three Mastercard Byron Nelson titles at Colonial in Texas on the PGA Tour.

Former Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen (72) is in second spot at eight-under.
