Lowry Lets Slip Super BMW PGA Start With Eventful Wentworth Finish

Wentworth, Surrey …

Ireland’s Shane Lowry bravely took it on the chin in posting a three-under par 69 and particularly when the Clara golfer was tied with McIlroy at five-under standing on the 18th tee.

Lowry sent his final drive right into trees from where he had to take a penalty drop.  He then found water guarding the green with his fourth, found the green with a sixth and holed a great putt for a double-bogey ‘7’.

“I played great today for 17 holes and just unfortunate at the last but then it is what it is,” he said.

Shane Lowry pleased with how he played over 17 holes on route to taking a double at the last in a round of 69

“If there is anything as a good double bogey then it was a good double to break 70 but then before that I was free-wheeling lovely and holing some great putts.

“But look, I will get out in the morning and try and shoot a good score as it doesn’t take huge numbers to win this event.

“Though I have to admit I did think to myself that it would be great walking off the last leading the tournament but then I made double and it’s not the end of the world.”

Graeme McDowell, who played alongside Lowry, grabbed the chance when Lowry was in trouble at the last to sprint to the scorer’s hut area behind the final green to go to the toilet.

“I was just busting and couldn’t wait,” said McDowell as he headed back to the course proper.

G Mac moments later returned to the scoring enclosure with a one-under par 71.
