Ponte Vedre, Florida …

Justin Thomas is celebrating after becoming the 21st different golfer to become World No. 1 after his share of 1tth place finish at the Players Championship.

Thomas, 25 dethroned fellow American Dustin Johnson who led the ranking for 64 since.

Johnson had teed-up at TPC Sawgrass under threat from those ranked No. 2 to No. 5 in the world and it was the World No. 2 ranked Thomas who taken Johnson’s place.

‘DJ’ needed the birdie the 72nd hole to tie Thomas on 11-under par but settled for a par and a share of 17th place but only a shot back of Thomas.

At the end of 2015, Thomas had been ranked just outside the top-100 in the world with one PGA Tour title and since then he’s won a further eight tournaments including last year’s PGA Championship.

Thomas had moved to World No. 2 in finishing runner-up in March’s WGC – Mexico Championship and is now the 21st different player to rise to the top since the World Rankings was initiated in April, 1986.

“It’s awesome and means a lot as it’s something I want to have for a long time, it’s not something I just want to have once,” said Thomas.

“To have it for a week and then be done with — like D.J. has and like Tiger did and other guys who have had it for a long time, that’s more of a goal of mine as opposed to just having it”.

Thomas is just the seventh American to become World No. 1 and with Tiger Woods have reigned atop of the rankings for a combined 683 weeks.
