Rory McIlroy was heading back to the comforts of his palatial Florida abode but with the unwanted excess baggage of having broken a longest run without a victory trophy.
Despite birding his closing two holes on day four of the Genesis Open it has now been 16 months and 24 days since McIlroy tasted his last success in winning the 2016 Tour Championship.
That’s longer than it took McIlroy to capture his first pro career title early in 2009.
McIroy, however, was in good spirits heading to scorer’s room locate in the Riviera Ladies locker room having birdied his closing two holes in a best-of-the-week 68 for a three-under par tally.
McIlroy had begun his week with a birdie and ended landing a laser-like 112-yard wedge to just three-feet and knocked-in the putt in a best-of-the-week 68 for a three-under par tally.
Sandwiched in between his first hole and 72-hole birdies was rounds of 71, 69 and 73 that included two eagles, and each at Riviera’s short par-5 first hole, along with a dozen birdies but also 11 bogeys and one double-bogey.
And while McIlroy headed to the scorer’s room, and located with the Ladies Lockers Room, with a smile on his face, it was very much a week that easily ‘could have been’.

McIlroy’s driving was not all that accurate hitting 31 of 56 fairways and while he also only hit 42 of 72 greens in regulation that translates into just 58.3%.
Once again, the biggest worry for McIlroy continues to be the shortest club in the bag though in fairness it was a little brighter on day four with seven one-putts but also a pair of three-putts.
“This week’s been okay and I feel like the position that I finished didn’t quite reflect how I played,” he said.
“I feel like I played better than finishing whatever it is, 25th or whatever it’s going to be. Yeah, I feel good about my game, just need to sharpen up a couple little areas here and there, but for the most part it’s been okay. I felt even last week at Pebble I missed the cut, but I still felt like my game was in okay shape, just not quite getting the most out of it. It was sort of the same this week.
“But then the more competitive golf I play, the more that that will just sharpen up and I’m looking forward now to getting back to Florida and sleeping in my own bed.”
McIlroy will tee-up in the Honda Classic, an event he made his PGA Tour in 2009 and then captured in 2012 to go to World No. 1, having now played four of eight events in the lead-up to April’s Masters.
And he was asked to assess if he’s on track in terms of his Augusta preparations.
“This is my fourth tournament of the year so I am still enjoying golf , and I still like the game (smiling) so that is always a good sign.
“Look, I miss playing and I miss being competitive last year given I only played 18 or 19 events.
“So, everything feels okay and I’ll probably finish seven or eight shots off the winning score here this week feeling like I left a lot out there.
“I feel all aspects of my game are decent,
“A couple areas I need to tighten up. I mean, even like off the tee I don’t feel like anything wasn’t really — even when I played my lowest round of the week this week, it wasn’t like it was my short game that cost me anything, it was more a sloppy iron shot here or missing the fairway there, and this course is very penal when you do that.
“So, everything feels okay”.
McIlroy will tee-up in Thursday’s starting Honda Classic at PGA National and just a short drive from his residence.
It was at the 2009 Honda Classic McIlroy made his PGA Tour debut.
Three years later, McIlroy denied Tiger Woods winning the Honda Classic by two strokes and his third of now 13 PGA Tour counting victories and in the prcoess of winning went to World No. 1 in the world.
A year later, there was controversy when McIlroy withdrew through eight hole of his second round after hitting his second shot into the water on the 18th he was playing as his ninth.
McIlroy, who was seven-over at the time, shook hands with playing partners Ernie Els and Mark Wilson and was making a bee-line to the car park before he pair had finished the hole.
Bizarrely, McIlroy released a statement a short time later bizarrely citing he had been battling a sore wisdom tooth.
The event has always been on McIlroy’s schedule as he returned in 2014 to play all four rounds only to lose out in a play-off.
He’s missed the cut in his last two Honda Classic showings in 2015 and 16 while he didn’t contest the event a year ago due to a rib injury that, in the bigger picture, ruined his 2017 season.
This week though he will have wife, Erica out supporting and not doubt looking to feast out next Sunday night on a first PGA Tour victory since October 2016.
“It will be nice to get home tonight and sleep in my own bed for a couple weeks,” he said.
“Obviously playing the Honda, played well there before, missed it last year. Yeah, it will be nice to get back and play there again. Yeah, sometimes I find it weird to play a golf tournament sleeping in your own bed and staying at your own house. Sometimes I would rather be at a hotel and just go through my usual routine.
“But it’s nice, it’s a nice week. Very familiar with everything there, so I’m looking forward to it.
