Lowry Happy With New Riviera Driver After Cracking Face At Pebble Beach.

Riviera Country Club, Santa Monica …

Shane Lowry tees-up in this week’s Genesis Open delighted to have quickly found a new ‘user-friendly’ driver after cracking the face of his driver last week at Pebble Beach.

Lowry revealed he cracked the face of the driver he’s had in his bag for some two years on the eve of last week’s AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

It could explain, in part, his roller-coaster scores of 67, 73, 68 and 74 but then a check of his stats for last week shows Lowry was 80% in ‘driving accuracy’.

“I cracked the face last week up at Pebble and while it seemed okay, I wasn’t hitting it far behind compared to the distance I was getting with my old one,” he said.

“Fortunately, I picked-up a new driver this week here at Riviera and it’s working really well.

“A good driver is just so important out here and if you drive the ball well on the PGA Tour, you have a fair chance every week.

“I’ve had the old driver for two years but then I was just so used to it, and I also don’t like changing clubs.”

Two years ago, Scotland’s Russell Knox cracked the face of his 2015 WGC – HSBC Champions winning driver on the eve of the Irish Open at the K. Club. Knox was in despair searching for a replacement and ended-up borrowing a driver from good friend, David Lingmerth of Sweden.

It did not help Knox when he went out on day one to shoot a 75 and come Sunday the Scot took it right to then World No. 3 Rory McIlroy getting with a stroke of the eventual winner to finish runner-up.

“I took this new driver out on the course today and it performed really good,” said Lowry.

In fact, so good no money changed hands when he played a very spirited Tuesday practice round against fellow Irishman  Graeme McDowell.
