Pacific Palisades, CA …
In a move closer to allowing women as full members, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers (Muirfield) have begun voting in a fresh ballot that hopefully will finally see another bastion of draconian male-only membership torn down.
The postal ballot will be independently scrutinised and the outcome is expected to be announced in mid-March 2017.
A vote was held on May 19th last year calling for a resolution to admit women as members of the club failed to reach the two-thirds majority required to change club rules.
This also independently scrutinised postal ballot recorded a vote of 64% in favour of the resolution and 36% against.
Outrage followed that also prompted the R & A, and as organisers of golf’s oldest Major, to strip Muirfield from again hosting The Open until such time women were voted in as full members.
Scotland’s legendary Catroina Matthew, and a resident of nearby North Berwick, also launched into a scathing attack by declaring at the time: “It’s inappropriate in this day and age to hold the Open on a course where women can’t be members.”
And in a boost in this latest move at Muirfield, The Captain, Captain Nominate and the Club Committee of the club have all backed the allowing of women as full members.
So watch this space.
