No Surprise Bjorn To Replace Clarke As 2018 European Ryder Cup Captain.

It will come as no surprise later this week when Thomas Bjorn is named as the 2018 European Ryder Cup Captain.

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson was heading to London after finishing runner-up in the Hero World Challenge to meet with European Tour CEO, Keith Pelley along with three immediate captains in Jose Maria Olazabal (2012), Paul McGinley (2014) and Darren Clarke (2016) to rubber-stamp Bjorn’s appointment.

Bjorn’s credentials to be appointed as a European Team captain are without question.

The 45-year old Dane who has won 21 times around the world while Bjorn has been a member of three European Teams as a player while he’s acted as a vice-captain on four occasions, including more recently at Hazeltine.

But Bjorn’s biggest strength in getting ‘the job’ is the fact he’s served as Chairman of the Tournament Players Committee for the last nine years.

Bjorn will become the fourth Europe captain from outside Great Britain and Ireland since the Ryder Cup was expanded in 1979 and following the late Seve Ballesteros (1977) along iwth Bernhard Langer who led Europe to victory in 2004 and then four years ago Olazabal has been a continental captain.

And it is expected also that American Jim Furyk will be Bjorn’s opposing captain in Paris in 2018.
