McIlroy Delighted To Cut Mickelson Down To Size.

Chaska, Minnesota …

Four-time European star Rory McIlroy could not have been more pleased in helping hand Phil Mickelson defeat in the 41st Ryder Cup at Hazeltine.

McIlroy combined with Belguim wonder golfer Thomas Pieters to hand the Star Spangled pairing of Mickelson and Rickie Fowler a 3 & 2 drubbing and secure the first point on day two for Darren Clarke’s side.

It was Mickelson’s 43rd match with the American now enjoying a record of 17 wins, 20 losses and 6 halves.

For Fowler it was his 10th match and he now has 1 win, 4 losses and 5 halves.

However after McIlroy had lost in three prior Ryder Cup matches against Mickelson, the Northern Irishman was a on mission.

Yesterday, Mickelson and Fowler combined to win 1up over McIlroy and Andy Sullivan.

Two years ago Mickelson and Keegan Bradley had beaten McIlroy and Sergio Garcia on day one at Gleneagles while at Medinah in 2012 McIlroy and Graeme McDowell were beaten by the pairing of Mickelson and Bradley

“When I saw this mornings draw, it definitely gave a lot more meaning to our match given Phil’s record against me”, said McIlroy.

“So when I saw the draw last night, I was like yes, I get to have a go at him again.  My record against Phil in the Ryder Cup isn’t what I would like it to be.  So personally I maybe wanted it a bit more for that reason.

“But to go out first, put a point on the board for Team Europe, that’s what we wanted to do.  We wanted to start the session off on the right vein.

“And with Thomas and I having similiar games I think that helps in Foursomes as well.”
