Hazeltine National Not The Same Layout Where ‘Y E’ & ‘The Beemer’ Tamed Tiger.

East Lake, Atlanta, GA … It is seven years since Korean Y E Yang became the first Asian-born winner of a Major Championship in coming from behind to deny Tiger Woods victory in the PGA Championship at Hazeltine National and venue for the up-coming Ryder Cup.

Photos of Yang proudly holding his golf bag over his head have become part of Major Championship time capsule material.

In 2002, Rich ‘Beemer’ Beem also beat Woods to win the Rodman Wanamaker Trophy.

However Hazeltine that has hosted four men’s Major and two women’s Majors has been reconfigured for the 2016 Ryder Cup.

Competitors will play the first four holes that those who contested the 2009 PGA Championship will have played but then the PGA of America has then changed the routing for the 2016 Ryder Cup.

Among those changes is making the Hazeltine’s 16th hole on the member’s scorecard, and a hole so pivotal in Payne Stewart’s 1991 US Open win over Scott Simpson, the 7th for the Ryder Cup.

And the 18th hole where Yang celebrated by raising his bag into the air and where ‘Beemer’ had also beaten Woods will play as the 9th for the Ryder Cup.

According to 2016 Ryder Cup Director, Jeffrey Hintz the rerouting was made as holes 7 to 9 are closer to spectator exits and also more open to visibility later in the day.

Of course, it has nothing to do with the fact that the 16th and 17th at Hazeltine and how the member’s play the hole are just not suitable for 2016 Ryder Cup ‘money-making’ corporate enclosures.

So Hintz, who worked as 2012 and 2014 Senior PGA Championship Director has kicked a goal for the PGA of America as there is heaps of room for corporate clients on both sides of the 16th, 17th and final holes.
