Luke Donald Continues Impressive Last Ditch Effort For Hazeltine ‘Wildcard’ Pick.

England’s Luke Donald continued a last ditch effort for a Hazeltine ‘wildcard’ pick with a two under par 69 on the opening day of the Barclays Championship.

Donald teed-up at Bethpage Park Black Course coming off a superb second place finish in last Sunday’s concluding Wyndham Championship.

European Ryder Cup Captain, Darren Clarke admitted in Denmark, where he is contesting the Made in Denmark tournament, he is considering upwards of seven players for his three wildcard picks that will be announced at 12.30pm (UK time) next Tuesday.

And Donald, with a wonderful record of competing in four victorious European Teams, must surely come into reckoning.

“I can’t do much to control the outcome, so all I can do is play a solid tournament this week and hope that Darren is looking for someone who has a good European Team record, and I clearly will bring that to the team room,” said Donald.

“It’s just nice to pick up good form at the right time and all I can do is have another solid week and give myself the chance to maybe win this week.

“But then after finishing second last week, I sat back and felt pretty pleased with myself as it has been a bit of a grind this year, at times.

“My game was so close to winning last week at Greensboro and even with an average putting week I was still able to finish second and that was a big confidence boost for me.  To be able to get into contention and to know that under the gun you can still produce the shots when you need to.

“But standing here now my short-term goal is to get into the Tour Championship while I have only this week left to impress Darren, so we’ll see and hopefully my cause is not too late as I feel I can can contribute an awful lot to the European Team cause”.
