Paul Lawrie Going Head-To-Head With Jean Van de Velde In Aberdeen

Former Open champion Paul Lawrie is set to face Frenchman Jean Van de Velde and the player he defeated to capture the 1999 Open Championship in Lawrie’s now annual challenge match at his golf centre in Aberdeen, Scotland.

The challenge match will take place at 1pm on Monday, July 18th and the day after this year’s Open Championship and in the week Van de Velde will make his British Senior’s Open debut at Carnoustie and where he saw the Claret Jug slip through his fingers.

Lawrie defeated both Van de Velde and American Justin Leonard in a three-man play-off at Carnoustie and with Van de Velde carded a disastrous triple-bogey seven at the 72nd hole, which included a visit to the Barry Burn, dashing his hopes of outright victory.

“Jean is playing in the British Seniors later that week so  I’m delighted he has agreed to come,” said Lawrie.

It is Lawrie’s fourth challenge match. Entrance will be free.
