First European Tour Occasion In 11 Years, Rain Forces 36 Holes On Final Day & Bizarrely Also In Germany.

The rain that has ruined play on day three of the BMW International Open will mean the leaders will have to play 36 holes on Sunday’s final day.

It will be the first occasion in 11 years, and also in Germany, that two full rounds will be played on the final day following 36 holes last being played on a day in the 2005 Deutsche Bank Players Championship of Europe at Gut Kaden GC in Hamburg.

Just four hours of play took place here at the Gut Larchenhof course and with only three players managing to complete their round before the rain forced officials to halt play at noon and with play eventually being called for the day at 4pm local time.

“We play an outdoor sport, and you get these days every now and again, so it does mean a pretty long day ahead of us tomorrow but we’ll get it done eventually,” said Sweden’s Henrik Stenson.

Stenson is among three players who head the Euro 2m event at 11-under par and among 15 players who did not tee up on day three.

Play will restart at 7.30am on Sunday morning with the final group going out at 8.42am and the final round then getting under way at 9.30am, and with the three second round leaders to go out last unchanged in the fourth round at 1.30pm.
