Matthew Fitzpatrick Eyes ‘Special Tour Membership’ Of PGA Tour.

England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick is eyeing taking up the option of ‘Special Temporary’ Membership on the PGA Tour.

The reigning British Masters winner, who finished a superb T7th in last month’s Masters, is just one decent PGA Tour result away from the privilege of taking to the world’s biggest golf stage.

Of course, Fitzpatrick has struggled in the States since the Masters by missing the cut in the RBC Heritage and the recent Players Championship.

And while he revealed he’s elected not to take-up an invitation to contest The Memorial the 22-year old Sheffield-born Fitzpatrick is looking forward to competing more later this year on the PGA Tour.

“I’ve spoken to the PGA Tour what I need to get to actually get a card. So just getting that in my head really for clarity, and that’s about it really,” he said.

“I wasn’t too sure about my decision when I was asked about it at The Players but I am notplaying Memorial now and I am playing Sweden, but there’s a couple of reasons behind that. I wanted to keep my options down the line anyway for PGA Tour.

“If I took that invitations, I think I’d would run out of invitations. That would have been  I felt that would have been silly; so I could give myself a chance. And the other thing I just think, having missed my last two cuts, I just need to play a little bit. I mean, obviously a lot of guys say it, but that’s why I’m playing Sweden next week.”

In fact, Fitzpatrick is lying 100th on the 2015/16 PGA Tour money list with earnings of $US 662, 851 and 17th places from Australia’s Marc Leishman in 83rd place with just over $US 800,000 in earnings this current season.

If Fitzpatrick can pick up a further $US 137,000 odd then he will be granted the ‘Special Temporary’ Membership he seeks.

News of Fitzpatrick’s intentions come on the same day the USGA announced that 27 additional golfers, including U.S. Amateur champions Ryan Moore, Byeong Hun An and Matthew Fitzpatrick, have earned full exemptions into the 2016 U.S. Open Championship, to be played June 16-19 at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club. These exemptions bring the number of fully exempt players to 78.
