Bernie Leads Team To Victory – R & A Royal Troon Media Outing On 2016 Open Venue.

Royal Troon, Scotland … Twenty-seven years after making his Open Championship debut at the 1989 Open Championship and Bernie (McGuire) has led his team to victory in the 2016 R & A hosted Media Facilitation outing at Royal Troon.

Two Australians in Greg Norman and Wayne Grady had been in the play-off for the 1989 Open Championship but it was American Mark Calcavecchia who pulled the victory carpet out from under the two Aussies.

Winners are grinners!

Now Bernie, and proudly born in Sydney, has somewhat made amends in leading the team of Gerry Gay (BBC Scotland), Charles Paterson (SKY Sports News) and Eric Nicolason (The Courier) to a one point victory.

“Being my first Open in 1989 I remember thinking at the time that how good is this, two Australians in a play-off for golf’s oldest trophy,” said Bernie.

“However it was not to be and with Calcavechhia sounding the first alarm bells for the ‘square grooved’ Ping Eye 2s when he drilled his shot from the left round down the final extra hole to 15 feet and holed the birdie putt for victory.”

Bernie indicated he did manage to grab three pars, including taking a ‘3’ at the par 3, 17th but it was clearly Gerry, Charles and Eric who combined for the four to secure 84 points and win by a point.

And while conditions were bright but windy, a huge ‘Thank You’ to the R & A and host club Royal Troon for a wonderful day’s golf.
