Matt Jones Deservedly Commands Sydney Home Town Newspaper Headlines.

For a first time in his career Sydney-born Matt Jones has commanded the sports headlines in the city where he grew up.

Jones captured only a second tournament since turning pro in denying World No.1 and defending champion Jordan Spieth to win the Australian Open.

Headlines of ‘No Stopping The Jones Boy’ greeted readers of Sydney’s Daily Telegraph while the Sydney Morning Herald chose the strange headline ‘It was Cement To Be’.

Jones grew-up around a 20-minute drive from the Australian Club at suburban Oyster Bay and has been a member of the club since he was 15-years of age.

And while Jones broke through to capture last year’s Shell Houston Open on the PGA Tour his victory was not rated high enough to take Sydney’s biggest winter sport – Rugby League – off the back page of the newspapers mentioned above.

“It’s amazing. It’s something I would have thought about from when I was six and I first met him (Norman),” Jones, 35, said.

“You know I had a hole-in-one at that age at my local Kareela Golf Club (in southern Sydney) and I got flown to Melbourne to meet Greg by the 18th green at Huntingdale (during an Australian Masters).

“To have my name on this trophy with names like Nicklaus, Newton, Norman, it’s a dream come true and something that can never be taken away.”
