Luke Donald Coming To Grips After Servant Sacked Master.

Former World No. 1 Luke Donald is still clearly dealing with being ‘sacked’ by his former long-time caddy despite a bright four under par 67 on day one of the British Masters at Woburn.

Donald is competing on the Bedfordshire course for a first time and managed five birdied to be trailing three shots adrift adrift of Sheffield’s Matthew Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick, 21 birdied his closing two holes in a seven-under par 64 to break clear of four players tied in second place on six under par.

The US-based Donald is competing back in Europe for a second week running after failing to qualify for the final two events in the lucrative FedEx Cup Series.

However the 37-year old has not tasted success since winning in Japan in late 2013 and was overlooked as a ‘wildcard’ pick for last year’s Ryder Cup.

Donald teed up at Woburn also ranked No. 66 in the world after being the game’s top-ranked in August 2012 but without Sussex-born John McLaren calling the shots.

“It was John’s decision at the end of Boston and he simply said he thought was time for a change and to move on,” said Donald.

“I was a little surprised as we were starting to make a little bit of a comeback and I was starting to find form

“But he had a few little reasons but I don’t need to go into that.  So it was it was more his decision than mine but I wish him the best of luck, he was a great caddy.”

When asked if Donald had a new long-term caddy in mind he responded:  “I’m looking for someone who’s energetic, upbeat and brings good energy to the round.

“I’m trying out a few guys now and we’ll see what happens.”
