Correction – Jim Ferrier Winningest Australian In Single Season On PGA Tour.

Correction.

In the excitement of Jason Day’s stunning six shot Barclays Championship we were incorrect to report Day thus became the first Australian to win four times in a single season on the PGA Tour.

It had been brought up in Day’s post final round New Jersey press conference he had ‘created history’ and naturally Day responded accordingly how proud he was to achieve the feat.

However Sydney-born Jim Ferrier, who passed away in 1986 aged 71, holds the record as he won five times in 1951.

Ferrier captued the St. Petersburg Open, Miami Beach Open, Jacksonville Open, Canadian Open and the Fort Wayne Open.

Ferrier’s biggest achievement of course was in winning the 1947 PGA Championship to proudly become the first Australian-born player to win one of the three US-based Majors.

As well, the great Bruce Crampton, still alive and now aged 79, won four times on the PGA Tour in 1973 capturing the Phoenix Open, the Dean Martin Tuscon Open, the Houston Open and the American Golf Classic.

Indeed, the great left-hander achieved success 14 times on the PGA Tour among his 43 worldwide pro career victories.

And with Day still three FedEc Cup events to contest it also led me to check the records for the Australian born male golfer with the most wins in a single season.

And in this regard we believe Greg Norman enjoys that honour in having won nine times in 1986, and in the year he captured the first to two Open Championship titles.  In that year Norman also won the Kemper Open on the PGA Tour along with the European Open on the European Tour plus his four triumphs on the Australasian Tour and all State Open titles – Queensland, New South Wales, South Australian and Western Australia.

Norman also won in 1986  the non-sanctioned Grand Slam of Golf and Suntory World Match-Play Championship.

And according to Wikipedia fellow Queenslander Norman Von Nida won seven tournaments, including two that he tied, in 1947.

So humble apologies to Jim and Bruce.
