Warren’s Masters Dream Fades As Laird Backs Fellow Scot For Augusta Future.

Fellow Scot Martin Laird believes Marc Warren has ample opportunity to contest the Masters many times over as Warren’s Augusta National dream faded in the Lone Star State of Texas.

Warren posted a Valero Texas Open third round 75 for a seven over par tally and a clubhouse share of 55th place on yet another bright but windswept day on the TPC San Antonio course.

If left Warren five shots shy of the top-18 finish he needs in the $US 6.2m event to qualify for a first Masters invitation.

Warren’s third round was a mix of three birdies but also four bogeys and a fifth hole double bogey.

Laird, who carded a 73 to be sharing 30th place on four over par, said:  “Don’t get me wrong as the Masters is the best tournament of the year and Augusta National is very special, but knowing Marc he will have many more years ahead of him in his career to tee up at Augusta.

“I qualified for the Masters here two years ago and that was great but personally I would rather play The Open at St. Andrews this year than Augusta.”

And while Warren would naturally be delighted to tee up in a maiden Masters he revealed he is more focused on contesting the April 29th starting elite WGC – Cadillac Match-Play Championship in San Francisco.

“It if happens tomorrow and I finish top-18 then that would be great but I’m more concerned on competing in the Match-Play Championship,” he said.

“And if I keep playing well enough I’ll break into the top-50 and then I can focus as well on contesting the Players Championship over here in May and the U.S. Open.

“So the Masters will always be there whether it’s this year or next year or the year after.”
