McIlroy Clueless How He Ended Up Topless Wearing A Mini Kilt.

World No. 1 Rory McIlroy was still clueless three days on how he wound up topless wearing a mini kilt on the night of the European Ryder Cup victory celebrations.

Photos of McIlroy also donning a long-haired crimson coloured wig, and with Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher holding a beer and his arm around McIlroy, will be one of the lasting snaps in the aftermath of Europe’s all-conquering five-point Gleneagles triumph.

However as the four-time Major winner wound up his practice for today’s commencing Alfred Dunhill Links Championship back in Scotland McIlroy was still was very hazy how he was coerced into shedding his European Team colours in favour of a tartan kilt.

“Honestly, honestly, I don’t remember as the time line sort of gets a big fuzzy about midnight,” he said smiling broadly.

“I sort of slipped out of the European Team around 10pm to join my friends and parents at the bar and I got a text from Keegan Bradley about 10.30 that was very funny, basically just inviting me to the USA Team room.

“So I said, yeah, I’ll go in.  I went to the Team room and there’s like two security guys at the door and said, you know, I’m here to see the guys who invited me in.  And the guy said, ‘Oh, I’m now sure they are letting anyone it at the minute.

“I said, ‘What are you talking about?’   He then said, ‘Let me go and check.’  So I’m standing here at the US Team door for five minutes, just felt so strange. He said,  ‘No, they are not letting anyone in just yet.

“He said,  Patrick Reed said … I was like, Patrick Reed? So I went, fine, went back to the European Team room, and a couple of the US guys were there, so they had obviously planned it or whatever and had a good laugh about it.

“So we then all piled into the US Team room and had a good time, and I can’t remember much after that other than I ended up in the kilt.”

McIlroy tees up at Carnoustie today (THUR) at 9.33am joining four of his Gleneagles winning team mates along with victorious European Team captain Paul McGinley.

McGinley says he’s been inundated with congratulatory messages in the days since leading Europe to victory including Irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny, who the Dubliner singled out for special praise.

“The Taoiseach has been texting me over the past two years and he’s been incredibly supportive in terms of facilitating the announcement of Sam (Torrance) and Des (Smyth) as my first two vice-captains,” he said.

“And he was one of the first to text me on Sunday so I am grateful for all his support and encouragement.”

And while McGinley intends to sit down and write a personal letter to all 12 players and the dozen caddies plus the five vice-captains, he revealed he presented each one of his team with the momento of a Veritas mechanical watch case that holds six wrist watches.
