Victor Dubuisson .. “I’m Not The Greta Gabo Of Golf, I’m Just Quiet and Humble.”

French rookie Victor Dubuisson spent more time dealing with questions about his personality than his European Team debut during the course of his appearance in the Gleneagles Ryder Cup Media Center.

Much has already been written about the 24-year old Antibes-based Frenchman and ever since he all but ‘locked-in’ his place in Paul McGinley’s with his second place finish earlier this year in the WGC – Accenture Match-Play Championship.

However in fairness to the Number 21 ranked player in the world it’s been more about Dubuisson the man than Dubuisson the golfer.

Dubuisson does not enjoy the best of rapports with at least one French golf magazine and drawing much laughter when admitting today:  “It’s only magazine I have a big problem with.  Unfortunately it’s the biggest one in France for golf.

“I have good relations with a lot of journalists, as long as they don’t, they don’t want to -because the problem is the journalists in France, not now, but before , they used to do interviews with golfers as they would do interviews with, I don’t know, maybe an actor or some people like that.

“It’s always been much more like that as they will ask you one question about golf and then nine questions about my private life, things like that, because they only want to make the story.

“They don’t know how to – because people are used to not be very interested in golf in France.  If it was an article only about golf, they will not really read it.

“So it’s not what they are looking for.  So that’s why it used to be difficult before with the French media.  But now everything is good, since everything is going well.

“And unfortunately it’s the biggest magazine that I still have the troubles.”

However there is no denying Dubuisson’s appeal this week being the first French-born member of a Ryder Cup team since Thomas Levet competed in the 2004 team.

But then golfer with the Errol Flynn looks, or the ‘Greta Garbo of golf as he’s been referred’, wants it know he is a quiet and humble individual.

“I would describe myself on the golf course as probably a quiet and humble person,” he said.

“But then everybody has two different – I think when you are at your work and when you are outside with your friend, it’s very different.

“Honestly, you can ask the other players.  I’m very funny and cool guy (laughter), but on the golf course, I’m not shy.  I just prefer to be quiet and humble than the opposite (smiling).

Dubuisson spent last week undertaking some promotion work for the French Golf Federation while he also spent some time deep sea fishing with his friends and landing one big fish as you can see from the photo he put on his Twitter page.

And after having been assured of selection for so long Dubuisson is delighted to be wearing the European Team colours.

“It’s feel great,” he said

“Even a year ago, I wouldn’t really expect to be playing this week in the Ryder Cup.  So when I started to do well at the end of last year, then I won in Turkey and then I thought okay, maybe this is a chance for me to play my first Ryder Cup.”
