Open Champion Rory McIlroy again continued to bury his Friday demons posting a blistering six under par 64 to move to a share of third place on day two of the $US 9m event in Ohio.
McIlroy, who can go to World No. 1 with victory in Ohio, birdied his opening three holes and then his closing two to move to seven under par.
He trails Ryder Cup team mate Sergio Garcia of Spain who birdied his last nine holes in a nine under par 61 and an 11-under par tally.
“I played really, really well today and very solid and not many mistakes,” said McIlroy.
“Sergio was playing in front of me and when he just kept making birdie after birdie I thought I better start doing the same.
“So it was nice to birdie the last couple and stay in touch with him.”
Fellow US Open champ Justin Rose shot a 67 to be sandwiched between Garcia and McIlroy on eight under par.
