Paul Casey Shoots Barclays 66 But Still Gets Shivers Playing Ridgewood’s 7th.

Paul Casey muscled his way into an eight way share of second place with a five under par 66 and on a course where eight years ago he walked off in tears.

Casey heads the large European contingent and not dropping a shot to be lying only a stroke behind American Bo Van Pelt who heads the $8m event at six under par.

And while Casey gives himself no hope of making this year’s European side he could help but again getting emotional at the seventh.

“The seventh hole gave me shivers today as that’s where I found out Monty hadn’t picked me and probably the worst moments I’ve had on a golf course,” he said.

“It was as much the Tour’s fault in Monty having to announce his wildcard picks on the Sunday but thankfully they’ve now seen the errors of their ways and Paul (McGinley) will announce his picks a couple days after next week’s Italian Open.”

Casey had been playing the 2010 Barclays Championship round in the company of Padraig Harrington and while ranked higher up the Ryder Cup standings, and also higher up on the World Rankings, he was over-looked by Celtic Manor captain Colin Montgomerie in favour of Harrington and Ian Poulter.

What made Casey more angry and disappointed was that the wife of Harrington got word her husband had been chosen while he was playing in the company of Casey, so that Montgomerie, who was at Gleneagles in Scotland, had no chance of advising Casey before he had teed off.

“They should have made the announcement back then while we were still playing golf in the States,” added Casey.

“It wasn’t fun as I finished 12th and I still managed to get myself around the golf course even though that hurt so bad.

“It hurt and I was in tears walking off the course.”
