Bubba Watson I Made Mistakes But At Least ‘I Gave My Umbrella Away’

Double Masters winning Bubba Watson admits he got is wrong at last fortnight’s 96th PGA Championship.

Not only did Watson seem to distract first and second round playing partner Rory McIlroy with his antics but the American admits one of the biggest mistakes was not to take part in the ‘Longest Drive Contest’ conducted off the 10th tee on Tuesday ahead of the season-ending Major.

“Not competing in the Long Drive was the first mistake,” he said Tuesday from The Barclays.

“Then you look at my attitude on the golf course … And then my language was not good. That’s a different topic, and childish again.”

Watson said that it helped to be called out by some in the media and a few of his friends.

“I take it on the chin,” Watson said. “It was my fault. Everything’s my fault and I should be bigger and stronger and better than that.”

One thing he did do right at Valhalla?

For starters, Watson made the cut, something he didn’t do in the two majors following his victory at the Masters in April.

He’ll try to build on that momentum at The Barclays, a tournament he has finished in the top 15 in each of the last two years but missed the cut at the last time it was played at Ridgewood in 2010.

Whether he makes the cut this time, perhaps he has already learned one lesson.

When Watson was finishing his week in the rain at Valhalla, a fan asked if he could have Watson’s umbrella and the Florida born Watson happily obliged.

“I was like, you know what, that’s a good question,” Watson said. “So I just gave it to him. I was like, I’m done. You need it more than I do. You’ve got to go follow the leaders around instead of us.

“He was (appreciative). And other fans cheered, too … He didn’t want me to sign it. He just wanted an umbrella.”
