Australia’s Jason Day is in doubt for next fortnight’s Open Championship after being forced to withdraw from this week’s PGA Tour Greenbrier Classic.
The World No. 6 with renewed concerns for his thumb that he re-injured in playing a shot beside ‘Mickelson’s Tree’ at the 13th hole during this year’s Masters at Augusta National.
The reigning WGC – Accenture Match-Play Champion did not compete again to the first week of June when he teed-up in the Jack Nicklaus hosted Memorial where he shared 37th place.
The 26-year then contested the U.S. Open finishing a superb 4th behind Germany’s Martin Kaymer.
Day then contested the Traveler’s Championship posting a final round 65 for a share of 18th but then headed to last week’s Quicken Loans National at Congressional to shoot a pair of 73s and miss the cut for a first time this season.
The Aussie has two PGA Tour victories to credit but of more note he has been twice runner-up at the U.S. Open twice (2011, 2013) and second behind Charl Scchwartzel in the 2011 Masters.
Day had been at Greenbrier for a Greenbrier Classic media outing last month expressing excitement about competing in the event for the first time.
This news now he has withdrawn must certainly throw a cloud over his presence at Royal Liverpool and now just over a fortnight away.
