David Horsey Denies Damien McGrane To Capture Russian Open.

Callaway’s David Horsey ended a three-year victory drought to par the first extra play-off hole and capture the Russian Open in Moscow.

Horsey, 29 fought back from a 12th hole double bogey to chip-in for an eagle ‘three’ at the 17th and then par the last in a round of 72 for a 13-under par total and tie Ireland’s Damien McGrane who let slip a first victory in six years when he bogeyed the last in a round of 66.

McGrane then found a greenside bunker at the first extra hole for an eventual bogey while Horsey two-putted for par for the win on the Tseleevo Golf and Polo Club course.

Horsey had led the opening two rounds and went into the last round tied atop of the board.

However he saw his four shot lead cut with back-to-back bogeys at five and six before two birdies in succession from the seventh.

Horsey then looked to have ruined his hopes of victory when he doubled the par three 12th hole and then dropping a shot at the 14th.

But a birdie at 15 and then a chip-in for eagle two holes later ahead of a closing par sent the Stockport-born player into the play-off

It was the second time in Horsey’s career he has been in a play-off and the second time he’s come out in front after winning the 2011 Hassan 11 Trophy at Agadir, Morocco.

“It’s a big relief to win and very much like my last win in Morocco when I also made a mess of a couple of holes on the back nine,” said Horsey.

“But standing on 17 I really didn’t know where I was in the tournament so after hitting my ball through to the back of the green I realised I was three behind and needed to do something drastic and quite quickly.

“So chipping-in for eagle was a great help and then thought I needed to make birdie at the last but not realising Damien (McGrane) had dropped one there at the last.

“So I managed a good up-and-down from the bunker to get into the play-off and managed to win that.

“But I didn’t look at a leader board to the 17th and in hindsight I will look to correct that in future.

“Overall I didn’t play that great today as it was a bit scrappy and didn’t manage to hole the putts but I managed to get the job done.”

“So to win is very special as it’s been a while since I won in Morocco, and also it’s been bumpy road along the way since then.”

Scotland’s Scott Jamieson shot a round of 69 to finish third on 12-under par.
