Rory McIlroy celebrated his 23rd birthday with news he is now the 12th richest GB & I golfer.
McIlroy’s personal fortune is now Euro 13m for the reigning U.S. Open champion to be lying joint 23rd in the overall top-100 highest money-earners in the UK and Ireland.
Former F1 World Champion heads the UK’s wealthiest with earnings of nearly Euro 60m.
Six-time Major winner, Nick Faldo is the richest golfer with a net worth of Euro 41m, and with Faldo having added Euro 2m after tax to his fortune last year from his TV commentary work, golf design and sponsorship deals.
McIlroy returned to competition, yesterday shooting a 70 on the first day of the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte.
However after taking a three-week break from the game but in returning he commented: “I don’t want to be burned out by the time I’m 30.”
At his age, the expectation is that McIlroy will win many more Majors which should see him shoot even further up the ‘Rich List’ in years to come.
McIlroy’s estimated wealth last year was an estimated worth of €8m and helped by his Congressional command performance.
Four years have passed since Pádraig Harrington won the last of his three Majors, the 2008 US PGA Championship, but the Dubliner remains second on golf’s ladder with a personal wealth of €40m while 2010 U.S. Open winner, Graeme McDowell is 11th with €14m.
However Open Champion, Darren Clarke, and Lee Westwood have each seen their golf fortunes fall by €7m after they lost money by clubbing together to buy a 10-seater Challenger 601 jet at the top of the market and selling it at the bottom.
