It’s become customary for equipment maker, TaylorMade to provide their players with a special theme golf bag at each new Major Championship.
It is also the case this week for the U.S. PGA Championship in Atlanta.
But for the year’s final Major, Taylormade designers came up with a image that not only honours legendary Atlanta Athletic Club member, Bobby Jones but also recognised David ‘Major’ Toms’ 2001 U.S. PGA success.
Looking at the golf bag:
1. The year 1902 set in a four-leaf clover was the year Bobby Jones was born, St. Patrick’s Day.
2. The 13 blue ‘teeth’ like images represent the 13 major tournaments won by Jones – four U.S. Open’s (1923, ’26, ’29 and 1930), three British Open’s (1926, ’27 and 1930), five U.S. Amateurs (1924, ’25, ’27, ’28 and 1930) and the British Amateur (1930).
3. The ‘Scales of Justice’ symbol represent the fact Bobby Jones was also a practicing lawyer.
4. 265 was David Tom’s four round total in capturing the 2001 U.S. PGA when last held at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
